Natural Dyes & Cotton

How do natural dyes compare to synthetic dyes? Natural dyes are biodegradable, non-toxic, and overall kinder to our environment than synthetic dyes. Natural dyes were used for centuries prior to industrialization and synthetic dyes!

Why is organic cotton better than synthetic fabrics like polyester? Cotton is a biodegradable natural fiber; meaning that at the end of its long and useful lifecycle, it can return to the soil and decompose safely.

Polyester, nylon, elastane (spandex, lycra), as examples, are plastic based. Plastic based fabrications will shed microplastic fibers, which end up in our air, soil, waterways, and as of recent studies even our bodies! In addition, at the end of its lifecycle, plastic based fabrications will continue to release toxic substances into the soil, groundwater, and surface waterways.

Microplastic fibers are shed when wearing and washing, this is a continuous source of pollution to our environment. What can we do to help? Wear and use products made from natural fibers such as cotton and wool. Support businesses that offer these products and are transparent about their supply chain and materials.
